Fourteen years ago a couple of Detroit expats opened a pizza trailer in Austin aimed at sharing their hometown pies with the Lone Star State. Today, those humble beginnings have turned into a multi-state operation that is now considered one of the best pizzerias in the country.
Via 313 is officially the No. 1 gluten-free pizzeria in America, a prize awarded to the Austin-based restaurant chain by USA Today’s Readers’ Choice Awards. Having earned prior accolades from the Food Network and Food & Wine Magazine, this is yet another prize for Via 313’s trophy case.
“Kudos to the teams in the kitchen and front of house who have raised the standards for what gluten-free pizza can be,” Kiplan Welsch, president of Via 313, said in a news release. “Making a gluten-free crust that holds up to our toppings and stays true to the Detroit style takes attention to detail — this nod from USA TODAY reflects that work and the heartwarming support from our guests.”
Via 313 was founded by Motor City natives Brandon and Zane Hunt, who sought to bring the best of their hometown flavors into Texas, creating an “icon that locals and tourists flock to for genuine Detroit-style pizza.” The name Via 313 is a reference to the Detroit area code (313). Today the company has grown to house 25 restaurants and two food trailers across Texas, Utah and Colorado, the release shared.
